Dave Wise
I’m Dave Wise—a hiker, traveler, expat, and firm believer that the best stories are rarely found where the pavement ends neatly.
This blog grew out of steep trails, unfamiliar countries, and the everyday reality of building a life abroad with my family. I write about hiking and travel in places that don’t always come with polished guidebooks—routes that are rough around the edges, landscapes that demand respect, and journeys that reward curiosity more than comfort.
Living overseas with a family has reshaped the way I explore. When hiking and travel are woven into daily life—not reserved for occasional vacations—you start to see places differently. Trails become classrooms. Villages become stories. A short hike can feel monumental when elevation stacks fast, weather shifts suddenly, and you’re responsible for more than just yourself. I try to share those experiences honestly—the climbs that burn, the views that quiet everything, and the moments when you’re reminded how small (and lucky) you are to be there.

Hiking isn’t just recreation for me—it’s a reset button. It’s how I disconnect from noise and routines, recalibrate priorities, and find balance between family, work, and adventure. I’m drawn to mountains, remote regions, and trails that test both legs and mindset—from high-elevation climbs to rugged local routes that rarely make anyone’s “top ten” list.
This site is also meant to be practical. I write for people who want real trail information: honest difficulty, elevation gain, distances, seasonal conditions, and what to expect when hiking internationally—especially in places where signage is scarce and conditions can change quickly. Everything here is grounded in firsthand experience, not hype.

But not every meaningful moment happens on a summit. Some of the best ones come after the hike—shared meals, tired legs, quiet conversations, and watching the light fade at the end of a long day. Living and traveling as a family abroad has reinforced something important: adventure isn’t only about distance traveled. It’s about connection, perspective, and learning how to show up fully wherever you are.
If you value wild places, honest storytelling, and exploration that goes a little deeper than checklists and rankings, you’re in the right place. I hope these stories encourage you to explore responsibly, push your comfort zone when it matters, and appreciate the raw beauty of the world—one trail at a time.
And if you’ve got a hike that humbled you, a place that changed you, or a route worth sharing, I’d love to hear about it. The best trails are rarely walked alone.
